Finding A Good Online Law Degree

Why do people prefer studying for law degree online ? Well the obvious answer is that it is cheaper and more flexible. You can still study for an law course in between work and family life.It saves commuting time and cost. It is possible to attend classes at times convenient to you.

There are 2 types of law degrees, you can pursue depending on whether you intend to practice law or not. If you intend to practice law, you can study for the Juris Doctor (JD) degree and if you do not wish to practice law, you can study for the Executive JD (EJD).

What is the difference ? Well, the JD law degree program is a four year, part time program and would meet the legal education requirements for you to sit for the Bar exam, whereas EJD, which is a three year part- time program, does not permit you to sit for the Bar exam, thus although you will not qualify to practice law, but can work in the law related field.

There are many law schools that offer online law degree programs. However you must always check the credibility of the institution offering the law degree. Make sure that it is accredited, especially if you wish to practice law in future. Non accredited online law degrees will not qualify you to sit for the Bar exams. Just make a comparison between online law schools and determine which law degree program is best suited for your needs.

You should make enquiries as to who are in the teaching faculty, how are you graded, what studying materials are available as part of the fees, do you have access to discussions online, do you have access to the teaching faculties / tutors. Make arrangement as to how the tuition fees are to be paid and are there any financial assistence available. Most importantly you should ask them for testimonials from past students and those from the legal industry (willing employers recognising the law degree). Most importantly, should you intend to practice law, check that the online law degree is acccredited by the appropriate bodies, for instance, the Bar Association of America.

There are reputable universities and colleges that now offer online law degrees for those who want to pursue a career in law or to enhance their career with a law degree. Online law degree programs also offer practicing lawyers opportunities as law guides or law tutors.

As online law degree courses now utilize the latest internet technology, students who graduate from these courses will become proficient in the use of online technology when they graduate. Students will usually have access to ebooks, bulletin boards (and forums) for discussions, email access to law tutors, video tutorials, video conferencing and audio lectures. In many ways online law degrees are equivalent in quality to conventional law degrees obtained through on campus study.

Research shows that online access to education is increasing every year as people want more flexibilty and cost savings to higher education.

How To Become A Good Lawyer

Having attended court for many years and having the chance of meeting many good and bad lawyers, I find that the keys to being a sucessful lawyer are as follows:

COMMUNICATION SKILLS - Communication is the key to legal practice. You will have to communicate with your clients, Judges, witnesses, opposing attorneys etc. If you have good communication skills, your chances of success is greatly improved.

PEOPLE SKILLS - Next to communication skills is people skills. As you will have to deal with all types of people, this skills is extremely important. You must know how to deal with people. Dealing with clients, Judges, witnesses, opposing attorneys, court clerks, your office mates etc. Having good people skills get things done. You can persuade people to see things your way. Having good communication skills without people skills is like having just one leg. When you have good people skills in addition to good communication skills, you can negotiate your way around difficulties and solve problems. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes - with good people skills, you can persuade people to forgive your mistakes and help you fix it.
It is a reality that low level clerks at the courts can make or break a case in the court system. Judges are influenced by the clerks (their employees) which attorneys are jerks and which attorneys are nice and treat these attorneys accordingly. The impression you give, although should not be important, but unfortunately it is.

ORGANIZATIONAL & TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS - It is absolutely essential that you be extremely organized. You have to manage your time well because you'll have countless of things to do and you'll have to prioritise. In legal practice, eveything is a matter of deadlines. From count filings, to replies to letters.

KNOWLEDGE AND APPLICATION OF THE LAW - Knowledge of the law is what you should learn in law school. Application of the law is mostly what you learn in practice. Although you may not remember a law or a particular area in law is new, you must know how to find such law (thus research skill is essential). Because the law is so wide, as these are different areas of practice, no attorney can know and become an expert in all the laws even if he / she studies for a lifetime. Because of this, most attorneys tend to specialise in certain areas of law.

MARKETING - This is also an essential area of legal practice these days with high level of competition amongst lawyers. You must be able to acquire clients. Knowing the law is not enough, especially if you plan to set up your own practice. You must lean how to market yourself and obtain clients.

These are some of the "inside tips" on becoming a successful lawyer. With this, I wish you good luck in you prospective career in law.

About Paralegal Programs

The US Department of Labour Occupation Outlook handbook 2008- 2009 Edition, states that "Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations."

A paralegal (or sometimes called legal assistant) is not a licensed profession in the United States.

Initially, paralegals received only practical or on the job training when the profession just came into existence sometime in the 60s.

However, as more and more people become interested in selecting becoming paralegal as a career, it is important today for someone interested in becoming a paralegal to obtain certification by some kind of formal education by studying for a paralegal program. Whilst getting certified is not compulsory, a paralegal who is certified will be generally better prepared for the job and has an advantage over other candidates who did not study for a paralegal program.

To earn a certificate or a degree in becoming a paralegal or legal assistant you must sit and pass exams set by colleges or institutions which offer paralegal programs. It is now possible to complete a certificate or degree pertaining to becoming a paralegal by pursuing an online law program(a paralegal program) in this field.

After passing the examinations in the paralegal program, you will need to complete the requisite practical training in a law related field. After becoming a competently trained paralegal, you may decide to specialize in specific fields such as family law, commercial law, criminal law, estate planning, real estate law etc.

It is best that you opt for a online law program (paralegal program) that is accredited and approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). You should always check with the Bar Association of your state about the online law program (paralegal program) you intend to pursue. The state Bar Association will usually be able to advice you on the paralegal online certificate or degree online (paralegal program) suitable.

Although the US Department of Labour Occupation Outlook handbook 2008- 2009 Edition, states that Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22%, you should not take this for granted. Pursuing a certificate or degree from an accredited paralegal program puts you at an extreme advantage over other candidates.

Some lawyers or organization would not recognize online law programs which are not approved by the ABA, therefore should you have obtained a paralegal certificate or degree which is not recognized, securing a job will not be an easy task.

While selecting your choice of study for an online paralegal certification (online paralegal program) may take some time, but rest assured that it will pay off in future.

How much a paralegal and legal assistants get paid may very according to the qualifications, experience, organisation and geographical location. Generally a paralegal and legal assistant gets between $38,000 - $56,000 per year.which is reputable and recognized.
