About Paralegal Programs

The US Department of Labour Occupation Outlook handbook 2008- 2009 Edition, states that "Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations."

A paralegal (or sometimes called legal assistant) is not a licensed profession in the United States.

Initially, paralegals received only practical or on the job training when the profession just came into existence sometime in the 60s.

However, as more and more people become interested in selecting becoming paralegal as a career, it is important today for someone interested in becoming a paralegal to obtain certification by some kind of formal education by studying for a paralegal program. Whilst getting certified is not compulsory, a paralegal who is certified will be generally better prepared for the job and has an advantage over other candidates who did not study for a paralegal program.

To earn a certificate or a degree in becoming a paralegal or legal assistant you must sit and pass exams set by colleges or institutions which offer paralegal programs. It is now possible to complete a certificate or degree pertaining to becoming a paralegal by pursuing an online law program(a paralegal program) in this field.

After passing the examinations in the paralegal program, you will need to complete the requisite practical training in a law related field. After becoming a competently trained paralegal, you may decide to specialize in specific fields such as family law, commercial law, criminal law, estate planning, real estate law etc.

It is best that you opt for a online law program (paralegal program) that is accredited and approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). You should always check with the Bar Association of your state about the online law program (paralegal program) you intend to pursue. The state Bar Association will usually be able to advice you on the paralegal online certificate or degree online (paralegal program) suitable.

Although the US Department of Labour Occupation Outlook handbook 2008- 2009 Edition, states that Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22%, you should not take this for granted. Pursuing a certificate or degree from an accredited paralegal program puts you at an extreme advantage over other candidates.

Some lawyers or organization would not recognize online law programs which are not approved by the ABA, therefore should you have obtained a paralegal certificate or degree which is not recognized, securing a job will not be an easy task.

While selecting your choice of study for an online paralegal certification (online paralegal program) may take some time, but rest assured that it will pay off in future.
